Silktide were commissioned to design and implement a completely new website for the University of Derby (www.derby.ac.uk).
The website since won the 2008 Heist award for best Higher Education website in the UK. In the year we launched the website page views increased by 162%, and have continued to rise to over 40 million per year.
The new website is fully content managed and includes a number of leading edge features designed to maximize end user experience, staff maintainability and conversion of prospective students.
Site Features:
-
Course database with real-time search
Starting to type in a course search displays results immediately, without a need to load a new page, providing the user with more rapid and engaging feedback. The course search will recognise the subject areas a student is likely interested in, and suggest related courses.
Courses can include text content, images, videos and links to related information.
-
Intelligent personalisation
The site attempts to identify the current visitor's 'type' by observing their browsing behaviour. For example, frequent searches for Computing Masters courses will lead the site to believe the visitor is a prospective Postgraduate student. The site then personalises key pages accordingly, for example displaying alternative promotions.
Once a user commits personal information to the site, it can be tracked and used to authenticate them in future, or reduce the need to re-enter duplicate information in other forms, e.g. their name or date of birth.
-
Multimedia
Appropriate areas of the site feature streaming video, virtual tours and Flash animations which the University can add or edit themselves.
-
Staff database with real-time search
A database of staff includes key contact and biographic information, plus a facility to add photos and audio clips.
-
Integrated proxy
To continue to support old web addresses not replaced by the new website (including hundreds of existing microsites), the new server intelligently passes control of selected addresses through to their original webserver.
Silktide have provided extensive training and documentation for the new website, and continue to assist and support the University with this project on an ongoing basis.
At launch (2006) the new site had over 1,500 pages, reaching over 10,000 in 2008.
